Activity

A set of processes, sub-processes and tasks.

A routine.

Availability (Material)

Percentage of the population

that is operational

See Metrics Menu

Availability (Operational)

Percentage of time a system is capable of performing an assigned mission.

See Metrics Menu

Contractor

A person or company that undertakes a contract to provide materials or labor to perform a service or do a job.

The Contractor provide materials or service to the Client.

Miscellaneous

Job

- Some action programmed in a routine service.

- A job may be scheduled or reactive.

- A Job may be related to a IPSP Task.

Scheduled: have breakfast every day at 07:15

Reactive: brush the teeth as soon as possible

LRU

- Line Replaceable Unit

- Something designed to be replaced quickly at an operating location.

Further the LRU is sent to the local workshop or to the contractor for repairs.

Materiel Reliability

The probability that a system will

perform without failure over a specific

interval.

The Reliability of the subsystem A is 0.97 for 500 hours.

See Metrics Menu

Modernization

Parts substitution for more performing ones.

Avionics model exchange.

MSG-3

A methodology to be used for developing scheduled maintenance tasks and intervals, to implement RCM philosophy.

The basic goal of MSG-3 is to identify maintenance tasks which are both effective and efficient in enabling a new aircraft to be designed and operated in a manner which achieves a satisfactory level of safety and reliability throughout its life.

PBL

- Performance-Based Logistics

- A strategy for cost-effective system support.

also known as Performance-Based Life-Cycle Product Support

PHS&T

Packaging, Handling, Storage & Transportation

Program strategy for safely packaging, handling, storing, and transporting a Product or related material as well as any special requirements and interfaces with organizations responsible for transporting.

The PHST plan is generated in the IPS element “Logistic Related Operations”.

Project

An instance of a System with milestones

Project X will start in MM/DD/YYYY, its Milestone A is MM/DD/YYYY, and will be ready for depoyment at MM/DD/YYYY.

RCM

Reliability Centered Maintenance

1. Choose the asset you want to evaluate

2. Evaluate the chosen asset

3. Choose the type of maintenance to perform (preventive, proactive or condition-based).

4. Repeat the RCM process for other equipment or critical assets.

Revitalization

An extension of life span through structural parts exchange.

Main stringer or longeron substitution.

System

a construct or collection of different elements that together produce results not obtainable by the elements alone.

a group of interacting or interrelated entities that form a unified whole.

- Respiratory system

- Hydraulic system

- Anti-collision System

- is delineated by its spatial and temporal boundaries, surrounded and influenced by its environment, described by its structure and purpose and expressed in its functioning.

Systems engineering

an interdisciplinary field of engineering that focuses on the design and management of complex engineering projects over their life cycles (SX000i).

deals with work-processes, optimization methods and tools to manage risks in such projects, overlapping with both technical and human-centered disciplines, such as control engineering, industrial engineering, organizational studies, and project management.

Systems Engineering ensures all likely aspects of a project or system have been considered and integrated into a whole.

Task

An atomic activity (can not be subdivided).

A task has a Start and an End.

A Task is part of the IPSP.

Some action required directly in the System is called a Job.

TOC or TCO

Total Ownership Cost or Total Cost of Ownership

The total cost of ownership includes the purchase price of a particular asset, plus operating costs over the asset's lifespan.

Looking at the total cost of ownership is a way of assessing the long-term value of a purchase to a company or individual.

consists of all elements that are part of the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) plus the indirect, fixed and linked costs. These can include items such as common support equipment, common facilities, personnel required for unit command, administration, supervision, operations planning and control, and fuel and munitions handling.

Update

Minor improvement, does not change version or model.

A new access window in the fuselage

Upgrade

Major improvement with change on version or model

A wing tip installation, a flap extension, etc.

WBS

Work Breakdown Structure

A picture with subsystems, elements and interconnections
